Current LWVMC Studies
Each January at the Program Planning meeting League members review current positions and propose possible studies on local County issues that are not covered by those positions. At the Annual Meeting in the spring, members determine which existing studies should continue, and which new studies should be approved. Approved studies may result in new positions and/or member education. Studies approved at the 2023 Annual Meeting are:
• Agricultural Reserve Study – This study reviews government activity related to agritourism; the Farm to Food Bank program; solar production in the Agricultural Reserve; and the status of the Transferable Development Rights program with emphasis on the availability of receiving areas. The study will include data from the 2022 Agricultural Census when it becomes available. The committee proposes to hold Discussion Group sessions in the spring of 2024 to achieve consensus to update LWVMC’s current positions. Chair: Margaret Chasson (agriculture@lwvmocomd.org)
• Law Enforcement Study – This study is a review and update of LWVMC positions on the system of law enforcement in Montgomery County that is directly involved in apprehending, prosecuting, defending, sentencing and punishing those who are suspected or convicted of criminal offenses - both while being detained and once released. The emphasis will be on policing policies in County. The committee proposes to hold Discussion Group sessions in the spring of 2024 and achieve consensus to update LWVMC’s current positions. Chair: Cynthia Boddie-Willis (lawenforcement@lwvmocomd.org)
• Economic Development – The Economic Development Committee has reviewed the strategic plan for economic development adopted by the County Council last year. As we move forward we will be reviewing the activity generated by the grants offered in accordance with the strategy. Another focus of our study will be the efforts to stimulate economic development in the eastern portion of the county. The committee will share the information gathered with League members via a fact sheet and host discussion group meetings. Margaret Chasson (econdev@lwvmocomd.org)
• NEW Maternal and child health care in Montgomery County with attention to reproductive choice
• NEW Current LWVUS position on digital equity to address possible deleterious effects of wireless technology as it is currently being implemented.
